How to receive your badge

To receive your Space to Dream badge, please present your certificate (which will be emailed to you after you submit your design online) to your Scout Leader before 17 October 2022.

Ready to take the Challenge?
1. TAKE THE CHALLENGE
Your challenge is to design a toy or gadget for someone your age who is moving to Mars.
You will use the process of design thinking – used by the best designers and engineers all over the world – to help you come up with your finished design.
The Challenge website takes you through the basics of the design thinking process. As you work through the Challenge, a real astronaut will tell you about her experience in space and you can choose create your design using free 3D design tools from Makers Empire, or you can draw your design by hand onto the ‘MAKE IT!’ Design Sheet.
2. SUBMIT YOUR DESIGN
Please submit your Challenge Completion Form here by 30 September 2022 to meet the Challenge deadline.
The Commissioner will consider with each of your designs: (1) is it a good design? (2) did it make me feel something? This could be anything from a ‘wow’ to a ‘whoa’ to a smile. Top rated designs will be chosen for inclusion in the Space to Dream public exhibition. Selected designs will also feature in the Commissioner’s Virtual Gallery of Designs.
3. CLAIM YOUR BADGE
You will be sent a certificate by email when you submit your Challenge Completion Form.
Please forward this certificate to your Scout Leader so they can organise collection of your badge.

After learning about design thinking with the Space to Dream Challenge, scouts may wish to create a challenging SIA Project.
Ideas to get you started:
- Run a competitive activity for other Scouts to guess the function of each other’s designs.
- For static models, learn about scale and what the components are.
- For wheel based models, have a working knowledge of gears, steering and suspension.
- Construct a model of your design, make it functional and run tests on its efficiency and make changes to improve it.
